See all 25 photos. Quick, make a mental list of famous Ford V-8s. The flatheads a no-brainer, and so are the side-oiler and Cammer. Then theres the Cleveland, FE big-blocks, Boss The list goes on. But well guess only the most die-hard Blue Oval fans pulled the Y-block out of their mental filing cabinets.

This is a shame. The Y-block marked a significant development in Fords history. It succeeded the flathead in with an industrial-strength block and a contemporary, overhead-valve design as GM had already done with its postwar Caddy and Olds mills. Right out of the chute, it produced hp from ci, besting the hp from the inch Merc flattie. It also had none of the flatheads overheating problems.

It grew from inches to, and eventually inches; and a in supercharged trim produced over horses. Yet the Y-block barely made a ripple in the rodding community.

Remember, inChryslers Hemi was already grabbing attention on the strip and at the lakes, and Chevy was only a year away from altering the high-performance landscape with its inch small-block. Even the Ford faithful soon had other motors to choose from, as the FE big-blocks first appeared in Compared to the plus-year run of the venerable flathead, the Y-block enjoyed barely a decade of production before getting phased out in favor of the Windsor small-block in So why should rodders care about this motor?

Well, if you want something different than the Chevy small-blocks you see in every other car and youre seeking a period motor for a Ford-based project, why not choose a Blue Oval mill from the Eisenhower-Kennedy era?

Especially since its capable of making horses. Its extra-stout construction makes it heavy, but it also allows an engine builder a lot of latitude in terms of boring the cylinders and running serious compression. Ford engineers built it to withstand pressures up tothough stock engines never surpassed 9.All artwork, text, design, and photos, are Copyright by Tim McMaster.

It came in ci ci for Mercurythe same displacement as the old flathead V8 but with a bigger bore and a shorter stroke 3. It produced hp as opposed to the flatheads final hp. Mercury also got the ci as their standard engine. In the Y-Block was increased again to ci for the Thunderbird and the Mercury.

This gave them many victories over the Chevrolet small block V Then in Ford introduced the FE with ci and ci which could also be considered a Y-Type block because of its deep side skirting. The Y-block was detuned and relegated to a secondary engine in cars and trucks. The ci was phased out in The ci carried on in cars until and in trucks until the end of its U.

Pros and Cons One of the design qualities of the Y-Block V8 is its deep skirting which makes for a very rigid block for added strength in the bottom end. The drawback to this is it also makes for a heavy cylinder block.

Because of the low detergents in oils of that era these passages would often become clogged giving the Y a reputation for bad oiling to the top end. Ford came up with a stop gap measure for this problem by feeding oil via an external tube directly to the rocker shafts from the main oil gallery. Because of better oils today and a grooved center cam journal, a clean freshly rebuilt Y-Block should no longer have this problem and thus, no need for the external oiling tube.

Cylinder heads on the Y have always been a point for discussion. They are a powerful and torquie engine with a pleasant exhaust tone because of their unusual firing order Performance parts, new and used, are becoming more and more available and can also be fabricated.

Their relative rarity makes them fun to work with. Could there be a Y-Block in your future? These Y engines were also used in HD trucks and industrial applications of the same era with ci, ci, and ci. Engine Codes and Horsepower Ratings Engine. The Jalopy Journal. Terms of Service. Not exactly sure what year it is but came out of a truck and was told it is a A guy off of this forum made me a pcv system for it. Well on this stock motor it didnt have a crank case road draft tube on the side of the block or on the valley pan at all.

Isnt thst wrong? It did have a hole in the valley pan for the PCV hookup. Yeah see this one didnt even have that.

No hole in valley pan or the block at all. Sounds like it'll eventually blow the dipstick out of the tube in an attempt to get some air. Can you post a pic of a similar pic? Michael, Minnesota. Cars and trucks sold in California started to change about the time the Y blocks were phased out.

Your motor may be one of those. The PCV itself needs to be for any engine with near the same cubic inch displacement. It can be a screw in, a push in, or an inline. Ole donOct 10, Ok well let me post a picture of how I have it now and see if it will work. Ol Don said it right. It needs a breather to let air in and the pcv to draw it out through the intake.

Two breathers don't work well on a street car either unless you love wiping oil off the engine every time you stop. Or the windshield if you are running without a hood. Mr48chevOct 10, Well the way mine is set up is I have a aluminum plate under my 2bbl carb with a hose going from there to the back of my valley pan where the valve is. I dont want breathers in my valve covers. I cant run a road draft tube because there isnt a whole in the block for it.

I am going to run a chrome oil breather on the filler tube but I dont want a hose runnibg off of it. IIRC, the 63 Y block I had just had a regular oil breather type of oil filler cap that you had to clean with kerosene every now and then and the PCV hose on the valley.

There weren't any other hoses. BleachOct 10, So what I am doing is correct then. The numbers are cast into various locations on the block itself, depending on what family of blocks you are referencing, but should be fairly recognizable and usually pretty readable. The basic breakdown of the modern numbering convention and newer is that the first digit is a letter and represents the decade in which the part was designed. The second digit will be a numeral, and will represent the year within that decade i.

The third digit is usually another letter, but can also be a numeral in rare cases, and it signifies the vehicle the part was designed for.

Ford Y-block engine

But that extra year paid off in that the Ford and Mercury engines had very few new engine introduction issues and many of these engines are subsequently still on the road today. The same could not be said for the introduction of the Chevrolet cubic inch engines which were confronted by a majority of warranty issues due to its rush into production. The last year for a Y-Block engine to be officially used in a Ford car was Some of these features included full pressure oil filtration, counterweighted fuel pump concentrics, oil trough for timing chain oiling, valve guide oil diverters, shaft rocker arms, a single water pump, and staggered oiling at the connecting rod journals.

Priority oiling to the mains was also a standard feature and was eventually reintroduced on the sideoiler as an upgrade to the FE oiling system. Although some of these features were eliminated after the introduction of the engine as cost cutting measures, other improvements were also introduced during the course of the engines production life Some of these included the oil slinger at the rear of the crankshaftneoprene rear seals that would replace the original asbestos rope seals, a gerotor style of oil pump over the originally introduced spur gear style of oil pumpthe introduction of the disposable spin on oil filter in place of the cartridge filter sytem, and an upgrade of the Load-O-Matic ignition system to a more modern ignition sytem Particular to this family of engines are the stacked intake ports at the heads and intake manifold.

Instead of the intake ports being side by side as is the common practice, the intake ports are in pairs and stacked on top of each other. The thought process behind this is a larger port being available while leaving room for the optimum placement of the pushrods.

Ford Y-Block Engine Assembly Guide: Step-by-Step

The intake ports being stacked also contributes to the runner lengths being the same lengths or more equalized between all the cylinders which in turn makes for a higher peak torque than an engine with varying lengths of intake ports. This family of engines is infamously known for having oiling problems at the rocker shafts which in turn is directly attributed to the poor quality of the oils at the time. The non-detergent oils in conjunction with the already slow flow rates of oil to the topend subsequently allowed the oil galleries to plug or stop up.

This problem plagued the entire Y-block family of engines during all years of production and the common fix was to run a separate oil line from one of the main oil galley plugs in the block directly to the valve covers to a hollow valve cover stud which allowed oil to directly feed to the rocker shafts.

By the original design and so that the top end was not flooded in oil, an oiling restriction was placed at the center cam bearing that forced the oil to flow through or around the center cam journal in a very controlled manner.

The design of the restriction simply added to the problem of the slow flow rate of oil to the topend. The modern fix is to groove the block behind the center cam bearing so that a full flow of oil at this area is restored to the topend of the engine and restricting any excess flow at the rocker arms.

And of course, a good quality oil and a reasonable frequency to the oil changes also helps significantly. Distinctive also to this family of engines is the rear mounted distributor and other than the LYB engines that were introduced inthese were the only V8 engines offered by FoMoCo having rear mounted distributors. Another distinction on the Y family of engines are the center cylinders having the exhaust valves placed next to each other.

With the introduction of the FE and MEL engines inlessons had been learned in regards to exhaust valve placement and the new engines remedied this issue by either placing intake valves next to each other at the center cylinders or simply doing an even stagger of the valves down the head. A quick reference of the engine specifications for will show the Ford V-8s ahead of the Chevrolet counterparts in displacement, horsepower and torque.

The Y-block head provided excellent air flow and considered superior to the Chevrolet engines of the same time period. Although the Y-Blocks were on the heavy side, the real detriment was its displacement limit.

A Guide To Ford V8 Engine Block Casting Numbers, 1952-1996

The original architecture was very small and tight. Simply put, with the ever increasing size and weight of the standard passenger car, the added parasitic losses for accessories like power steering, power brakes and air conditioning, cheap gasoline and the horsepower race all conspired to outgrow the first Ford OHV V-8 engine. That engine was used in the various car lines through at which point it was officially replaced with the MEL Mercury Edsel Lincoln engine that was introduced in The LYB engines did continue to be used in the trucks though through The Y-block was considered a major advancement over the flathead.

The early engines also incorporated a washered 14mm sparkplug which was superceded by a tapered seat 18mm spark plug in The engine was available in the Fords for law enforcement use. This engine was originally intended to be the Ford offering in and the would then be the Mercury offering for But the introduction of the by Chevrolet in moved plans up in that the was moved into the Ford spot and the moved into the Mercury spot instead.

The same interchange issues that were present with the engines also apply to the Mercury engines. Most standard Fords used this engine with a two barrel version being rated at HP. Forthe was not available in the Ford pa ssenger car lineup except as an option when ordered by a government or law enforcement agency. Forthe was offered in the Ford lineup as the Thunderbird V8 option while the still remained the standard V8 in The venerable Ford Flathead V8 was antiquated by the early s. To remain competitive, Ford created a new overhead-valve V8 engine they called the Y-Block.

First introduced inthe Y-Block engine would power Ford and Mercury products for the next 10 years. Lincoln introduced their engine inand it was a different design from the Ford Y-Block. The distributor is located at the back of the engine and off to one side.

Also, the valvecovers are held on with two bolts through the top of the covers. Ford was always the most conservative of the major automakers, holding onto older designs far longer than GM or Chrysler. But market forces pushed Ford to develop new designs in the s. The company had designed the Y-block for a introduction, but a shortage of nickel due to Korean war needs prevented the company from manufacturing the engine in sufficient quantities.

The engine displaced cubic inches and made horsepower and pound-feet of torque. Ford customers were enthusiastic about the new engine.

Mercury customers received an uprated cubic inch Y-block rated at horsepower and pound-feet of torque. ForFord increased the displacement and made engines at both and cubic inches. The made horsepower and pound-feet of torque.

All basic Ford products received this engine.

The engine gave Thunderbird and Mercury drivers horsepower and pound-feet. With this engine, the Thunderbird rocketed from zero to sixty in just 9.

The engine variously made, or horsepower depending on the model year. Starting inMercury dealers also offered a performance kit with alternate heads and camshaft, and a twin-four-barrel induction system that bumped output up to horsepower.

The apex of Y-block performance came inwhen Ford added a Paxton supercharger to the engine. Ford introduced its big block FE engine on larger cars in The main reason for the discontinuation of the Y-block is usually given to be the hard displacement limit of about cubic inches. However, the design has valvetrain oiling problems.

The Y-block also offers very attractive performance numbers in stock form, so that owners of Ford products from the s can run a stock V8 that is correct for year, make, and model without sacrificing essential performance.
